Summary

The audio recording, made at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington, offers an immersive audio experience capturing the vibrancy and diversity of the Out in the City event. The recording provides a detailed walkthrough of various stalls and activities, showcasing the rich tapestry of the LGBTQ+ community and its allies.

The tour begins with a palpable sense of excitement as Hamish, accompanied by Gareth, explores the first floor of the Michael Fowler Centre. They encounter the Amnesty International stall, adorned in bright yellow, where Julianne and Christine explain their mission to protect human rights globally. They highlight a petition calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and discuss their efforts to support LGBTQ+ individuals facing human rights abuses.

Next, the tour stops at the Gender Minorities Aotearoa stall, offering resources on trans issues, trauma, and body positivity. The stall features various merchandise, including mugs and posters, aimed at raising awareness and funds for the organization. Hamish and Gareth then visit the Rainbow Wellington stall, where Billy Clemens and Sam French talk about their community service and fundraising efforts, which include partnerships with Nuku Ora and the New Zealand Rainbow Charitable Trust.

The tour continues with a visit to the stalls of different organizations, including the Wellington Frontrunners, a group promoting fitness and camaraderie among LGBTQ+ runners, and the Burnett Foundation Aotearoa, which provides education and testing services for HIV and other sexual health issues. The Foundation's representatives emphasize the importance of their work in the wider rainbow community and highlights their free services.

Another notable stop is at the Faith Communities United in Love stall, where representatives discuss their efforts to create affirming faith communities and support individuals dealing with religious trauma. This stall invites participants to contribute to a collaborative artwork imagining a hopeful queer future.

The Black Sheep Animal Sanctuary's stall, offers insights into their work rescuing and rehabilitating abused and neglected farm animals. They sell merchandise to support their cause and discuss their commitment to providing lifelong care for animals that cannot be adopted.

As the tour progresses to the second floor, Hamish and Gareth encounter more diverse stalls, including the MPI Primary Pride Network, promoting inclusivity within the Ministry for Primary Industries, and Massey University's Kāhui Irarau, which supports rainbow students and staff. They also visit the New Zealand Drug Foundation's stall, where representatives discuss their drug checking services designed to keep users safe.

In the Harbour Lounge, Hamish and Gareth find the Kawe Mahara Queer Archives Aotearoa stall, where volunteers are dedicated to preserving the stories and histories of the LGBTQI+ community. They stress the importance of documenting the experiences of queer individuals, particularly those from marginalized groups, to ensure their stories are not lost.

Throughout the tour, Hamish and Gareth engage with various community members, highlighting the interconnectedness and mutual support within the LGBTQ+ community. The event is characterized by its inclusive atmosphere, with stalls representing a wide range of interests and services, from sports and fitness to animal welfare and faith communities.
