MacGregor was killed by Michael Boyle on 5 June 1970 at MacGregor's flat on the The Terrace. They met at the St George Hotel in Willis Street. Boyle claimed (unsuccessfully) MacGregor had provoked the attack because of his homosexual advances. After serving a prison sentence Boyle changed his name to Michael Avanti.
