English poet Rupert Brooke visited New Zealand (including Wellington in January 1914) on his way to Tahiti. Brooke's words are inscribed on the Cenotaph: These laid the world away; poured out the red sweet wine of youth. Brooke died during World War 1 on a French hospital ship on 23 April 1915.
