McLean was a journalist, author and tarot card reader. Originally from Scotland he lived in New Zealand from 1973 until his death. In 1989 he published a book about his experiences living with HIV/AIDS called If I Should Die. He was carried into Turnbull House on a stretcher to launch the book on 21 March 1989. He died three days later.
