Cottrell, a journalist working at RNZ, was killed by Nicho Allan Waipuka in 2011 while walking home from work. Manuel Renera Robinson was acquitted of his murder. A memorial bench was erected in his honour on Boulcott Street. Cottrell was actually attacked just on the opposite side of the road next to the Wellington Central Baptist (46 Boulcott Street)
