Out in the Square MC Lady Trenyce Wellington's Civic Square will be the place to be on Saturday 12 March, as it hosts the exuberant beginning to the AsiaPacific Outgames - the gay and lesbian fair Out in the Square. The fair has been running in Wellington for 26 years, since before being gay was even legal in New Zealand. Its aim then was to raise awareness, which is still one of Out in the Square's main goals today. Previous fairs at Newtown have attracted 5,000 visitors, but since the move to Civic Square, numbers have consistently reached over 10,000. This year that is expected to increase even further due to the number of visitors who will be in town for the Outgames. The festivities will kick off at 11am with an official opening by Wellington's new Mayor Celia Wade-Brown, plus local MP Grant Robertson. Organisers say Out in the Square will feature, "fabulous entertainment of the widest variety including some of the country's top drag queens and popular local bands and singers. Top that off with some fabulous food, colourful carnival attractions, loads of arts, crafts, clothing and other stalls, plus gay anthems pumping out all day - Out in the Square promises to be a glorious day in the capital."
