Tim Barnett Former Christchurch Central MP Tim Barnett is urging residents of the city to stay strong in the face of the devastating aftershock which has left the city and many lives in ruins. The Rainbow Labour stalwart has been following the horrific aftermath of the quake from his base in Cape Town, where he is the Global Programmes Manager for the World AIDS Campaign. "Never has the spirit of resilience and optimism which was so evident after the September quake and sustained through months of aftershocks, been needed more than now," he says. "This is a disaster on an international scale, and shows how nature can dominate so utterly, rendering people helpless. "Watching from afar as people I know so well go through this nightmare, and as the character of the city I love is changed forever, has its own unique pain. Kia kaha; stay strong," he finishes. Barnett represented Christchurch Central from 1996 to 2008.
