Rice to rock Sunday nights on Radio Ponsonby

Fri 18 Feb 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Kelly Rice rocking the Big Gay Out with Razor Sunday nights on Auckland's Radio Ponsonby are about to get an added dose of queer, with host Kelly Rice moving from her Saturday slot to Sunday evening. Kelly's Sunday Rock will run from 6pm till 8pm, preceding Steven Oates's gay news, lifestyle and music show Wild Oates, which is on air from 8pm till 9pm. Rice says pure and simple she wants her Saturday nights back, but she also likes the idea of creating a gay Sunday three hour block. "I also like the idea that people may have had a big Saturday night and they're depressed about work, but they get to listen to us." She is encouraging listeners to ustream the webcam footage of the show live, saying she wants to be in people's bedroom, or lounge, on a Sunday night. "I like the idea of playing to a whole lot of people who are relaxed and not going out." Kelly's Sunday Rock will differ from her previous show The Kel Word Saturday Night Shakedown, as it will be more about playing smooth rock music along the lines of Arcade Fire and Florence and the Machine and a bit less about lesbian gossip and lesbian issues. "Radio Ponsonby does play a lot of house music, which is fantastic," she says. "But being in the band Razor I know that there are a lot of gays and lesbians that love rock as well." Razor is an all-woman covers band Rice fronts, which rocked the Big Gay Out just last Sunday. "I've been there for 16 years and I've never seen that crowd like that before," she marvels. "It was fucking amazing." Radio Ponsonby was a major supporter of the event, broadcasting live from Coyle Park throughout the day. Kelly's Sunday Rock will launch on Sunday at 6pm, followed by Wild Oates at 8pm. Radio Ponsonby is at 107.7 on the dial, but if you can't pick it up it also streams live on the station's website.
