Simon K. Leary and Paora Taurima The absolute banquet of arts and culture on offer in Wellington for the Outgames will begin with a return season of Mate and Lovers, the play adapted from Chris Brickell's Montana winning book. Writer, producer and director Ronald Trifero Nelson is bringing the critically acclaimed show to Downstage from 8 - 12 March leading up to the 2nd Asia Pacific Outgames. The play has been slightly altered from its latest season in Auckland, where it was described as "a brave work well realised" by GayNZ.com reviewer Jay Bennie, who added "It speaks to us. It entertains us and even manages to educate us a little too. Because it is us." Mates and Lovers both explores the history of gay men in New Zealand and adds a timely political edge, It stretches from pre-colonial to 21st century and features new choreography by Taiaroa Royal and an original score by Samuel Holloway. Performers Paora Taurima and Simon K. Leary will bring the stories to life at Downstage from 8-12 March. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at (04) 801 6946 or in person at Downstage's box office. Check out the Fabulous Arts Aotearoa website
