A classy new sauna which is about to open in Wellington has been inspired by the traditions of Rome – and in true Roman fashion, its owners have had a few battles during its creation. The Emperor's Bathhouse at 5 Wigan St will have a grand opening party on 28 January from 4pm. It features wet areas and a bar based around Roman traditions, plus a TV lounge in Roman drawing room style. Other features are a 148 jet spa and an infrared sauna and a double generator steam room, plus private retreats and play areas upstairs. It comes after those who dreamed up the project struggled to find a building that logistically fitted the design and requirements of a sauna and spa area, as well as finding a building owner who was comfortable with the business. "Believe it or not, despite now being well into the 21st Century, there was some prejudice and ignorance facing us, as we dealt with some landlords," the owners say. "We faced the 'brick wall' mentality at times and had to walk away from potentially good venues. At the same time, we visited many buildings that when we assessed the space, quickly threw up far too many logistical costs, for us to even contemplate going ahead with the venue." In mid-2010 they found the perfect building and landlords who were willing to make the project work. They then had to go through the intense consent work with the council, to change the use of the building from industrial to commercial. "We are really hopeful that the gay community is going to be thrilled with the venue that will be presented, towards the end of this month," the owners say. "We have created a venue which we hope will appeal to all sections of the gay male community." Emperor's Bathhouse is situated at 5 Wigan Street, and will be opening on 28 January, at 4pm.
