Ricky Gervais The straight-up style of Ricky Gervais at the Golden Globes has some predicting he will not be asked to host another Hollywood awards show, particular due to his "gay scientologist" crack. The British comedian warned from the start that his plan for hosting the awards was to ensure he was not asked to do so again. After laying into Brad and Angelina, Charlie Sheen and Robert Downey Junior, Gervais received the biggest gasp from the audience when he made a joke about an unnamed Scientologist/actor. While referring to films that had not made the cut this year, such as I Love You, Phillip Morris, featuring 'two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. '. Gervais then added: "Sort of the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists then," then added "My lawyers helped me with the wording of that joke." He disappeared for an hour at one stage of the show, creating speculation he had been fired. He then returned to present a much more toned-down end to the awards. US media have labelled his performance 'uncomfortable', 'corrosive' and 'abusive'. The Hollywood Reporter predicted it would 'undoubtedly be his last hosting gig for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. However most of the crowd seemed to lap up the comedy and The Daily Mail quotes The King's Speech director Tom Hooper as summing up the general feeling after the ceremony: "I thought he was hilarious but will he ever present another award show again? I don't know, but if he went out, he went out burning."
