Noms close soon for Making a Difference

Tue 18 Jan 2011 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Nominations are closing in just a few days for the Making a Difference project, which aims to celebrate positive role models in the GLBT community in Auckland. Organiser Gareth Watkins is looking for people who have made a positive difference to being queer in Auckland and will celebrate eight people with extended audio interviews, which will then feature later this year on the GABA and PrideNZ.com websites. PrideNZ.com was established in 2009 as a positive space for Queer/LGBTI voices from Aotearoa New Zealand. Its aim is to educate, challenge, affirm and provide a sense of community development, creating positive change and growth for LGBTI communities in New Zealand. "We want to select a diverse group of people for this recording project," says Watkins. "We want people who can promote positive experiences of being LGBTI within Auckland - whether it's through community work or self development. If you know of anyone, or want to nominate yourself, please get in touch." Making a Difference is one of many community-orientated projects funded by the GABA Charitable Trust. Over the past decade the Trust has donated in excess of $150,000 to fund a broad range of organisations. "The GABA Charitable Trust has been very generous - not only financially, but with support and assistance” says Watkins. "In a time of general recession and service reduction in lots of areas, it is really heartening to see the Trust funding a project that will create new resources which will benefit LGBTI communities – not only within Auckland – but throughout New Zealand." Nominations close on Friday 21st January – so if you want to put someone forward head to PrideNZ.com
