To Elton or David: a boy, Zachary

Wed 29 Dec 2010 In: International News View at Wayback

Sir Elton John and David Furnish Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish have become fathers after a boy was born to a Californian surrogate mother. It has just been announced that Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born on Christmas Day, weighing 7lb 15oz. He is John's first child with Furnish, with whom he formalised a civil partnership in 2005. It is not known whose sperm was used. The fathers say they are "overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment". John, 63, has previously said the couple had talked about adoption and that it was Furnish, 48, who wanted to do it but he had objected because of his age. The pair had tried to adopt an HIV-positive Ukranian orphan but were apparently stymied by Ukranian law. While initial reaction from the couple's celebrity friends such as Liz Hurley is positive, there is already a groundswell of criticism emerging in UK talkback media and internet discussions using phrases such as "designer babies" and speculating on the boy's life with "no maternal mother in his life and two elderly gay dads."
