Sir Elton John will be the first major artist to play at Dunedin's new stadium, following the Rugby World Cup late next year. CEO of Dunedin Venues David Davies says it's a fantastic coup for the city and the superstar will attract a huge crowd of young and old from the city, region and beyond. "Elton will set a benchmark for performances to come in the stadium and with his five Grammys, an Academy Award as well as Golden Globe Awards under his belt I think we can be fairly confident the bar will be set high." Promoter Phil Sprey says it's going to be a big show and is an international vote of confidence in Dunedin's ability to deliver world class events. "We have hosted Elton in Wellington, New Plymouth and Auckland over the last few years and it is a real honour to be bringing him and his band as the first international music performance in to Forsyth Barr Stadium. It's been over twenty years since Elton was last in the South Island so he's excited to be coming back and I know the fans will be delighted with this announcement." The exact date of the concert has not yet been set. The date that tickets will go on sale will be announced early in the New Year.
