"Queer" low carb beer drinker shirts offend

Tue 7 Dec 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Specialist Marlborough brewer Moa Beer has ruffled feathers with a campaign which insinuates anyone who drinks low carb beer is queer. Its t-shirt campaign on Facebook is described as a "low blow" by one GayNZ.com reader, with other gay beer drinkers also expressing concern at the stereotype. "I am gay and drink full strength beer and so do all my friends," says one reader. "Low carb beer tastes like rubbish. What a silly campaign. I'll be leaving Moa on the supermarket shelf this summer." In a response to GayNZ.com Daily News, Moa Beer's marketing manager says the campaign is saying that anyone who drinks low carb beer must be queer The spokesperson says the company is bothered that the campaign has offended some gay people, but hasn't really thought about whether it's responsible. Moa Beer has not received any complaints about the t-shirts, but has offered to send some shirts to GayNZ.com to "give away and/or burn if you like". Do you find the t-shirt offensive, or funny?
