Jamaica: gay rights advocate murdered

Mon 6 Dec 2010 In: International News View at Wayback

A member of a Jamaican gay rights group has been found stabbed to death. The body of the 26-year-old man was discovered Friday behind an insurance company building in Kingston. The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) is calling for a full investigation. "While the reason behind his death is not yet known, allegations are that his life had been under threat for some time," it says. Jamaica is rife with anti-gay stigma and still has a sodomy law banning sex between men. J-FLAG said while the reason for the death is not known, the event highlights the safety and security challenges that confront the gay community in Jamaica. The rights group is urging parliamentarians to demonstrate leadership and promote respect for gay Jamaicans.
