Australia snaps up dropped NZ HIV expert

Thu 18 Nov 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

Douglas Jenkin The NZ AIDS Foundation's loss has become Australia's gain as an HIV and sexuality expert dropped by the NZAF has been snapped up by Australia's premier HIV prevention organisation. Douglas Jenkin departed the NZAF in August after his position of National Campaigns Co-ordinator was disestablished. However, he has already been employed by ACON, previously known as the AIDS Council of New South Wales. ACON lists as two of its primary goals reducing the number of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections among gay men and other men who have sex with men, and improving the health and wellbeing of people with HIV. It is essentially the NZAF's equivalent in New South Wales but deals with a vastly larger at risk population base, including metropolitan Sydney, and thus receives considerably more public funding. Jenkin's role with ACON will be to take planned prevention strategies and hone them to deliver maximum impact, including input into message, appearance and media placement. "It's basically exactly the same job as I was doing at the AIDS Foundation," Jenkin notes. He starts the job in just over a week's time and says that despite some sadness at leaving New Zealand he is looking forward to the new job. "And I'll be back to visit from time to time," he promises. You can discuss this New Zealand gay community news story in the GayNZ.com Forum
