New Mayor to open Out in the Square

Wed 17 Nov 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Celia Wade-Brown New Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown has continued her swift support of the city's GLBT communities, accepting an invitation to open Out in the Square 2011. She says it's great to be able to take part in one of Wellington's best-established, most colourful and most fun summer events. "I love the fact that Wellingtonians are so keen to celebrate their distinct identities with a string of superb, inclusive festivals and events throughout the year, and that the city embraces that." Wade-Brown has been to the fair many times in the past and says Wellington's GLBT communities play a huge role in the liveliness of the city. "They are very positive, outward-looking and lively communities and as such reflect beautifully the Absolutely Positively Wellington ideal. Their members play a large part culturally in the creative capital - and economically too, with GLBT tourism of ever-growing importance. The GLBT communities both reflect and enhance Wellington's reputation as a relaxed and diverse place which is great to visit and wonderful to live in." Out Wellington's Andy Boreham says the committee is excited to have the Mayor open the fair officially. "It's been somewhat of a tradition that the Mayor opens the fair," he says. "We are looking forward to introducing Celia to the GLBT communities of Wellington at Out in the Square." An ardent Greens member, some of Wade-Brown's main goals in office include looking after Mother Nature. She plans to "harness the benefits of clean technology, to increase community engagement, to address the challenges of climate change and improve transport in Wellington," which she says will benefit all Wellingtonians, including GLBT. Wade-Brown has already agreed to be a Rainbow Wellington patron.
