In an article sub-headed "a courageous declaration of love" the Woman's Weekly magazine has front-covered TV presenter Alison Mau's confirmation of her bisexuality. Mau's first public acknowledgment of her sexuality and her love for partner Karleen Edmonds, was greeted with cheers at last Saturday night's Queen of the Whole Universe fundraiser pageant. Once an immediate interview with Mau was published on GayNZ.com the same night the story was taken up by web and print media. The women's magazines and Sunday papers which had led the coverage of this aspect of her life earlier in the year, had to wait until the weekend. None the less, their stories have been comparatively muted. The Woman's Weekly quotes Outline counselling service General Manager Vaughan Meneses as saying Mau's coming out showed "strength and courage." It quotes 'sources at the event' as saying she will prove a positive role model for the wider community. The Sunday Star Times quotes Mau as saying she has had "some wonderful messages of support this week" and criticising the intrusive elements of the media for using her personal life to make money. The Sunday News, which kicked off the whole saga in its gossip column - an item which culminated in Mau and Edmonds being stalked by paparazzi - says the pair are about to take a break in Los Angeles.
