Outgames registrations running high

Thu 28 Oct 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback View at NDHA

There has been a surge in entries for the AsiaPacific Outgames in Wellington, with up to half of the final expected numbers achieved in some sports with four and a half months still to go. Organisers say the number of people registering each day has more than quadrupled as the close of earlybird fees approaches. "Numbers are running ahead of our forecasts," says Registrations Convenor Peter Gordon. Sports such as running and triathlon have no upper limit on numbers. For other sports, there is a maximum number that can be accepted for the competition to be completed, and medal winners decided, within the number of days allotted. Once this maximum number is reached, no further registrations will be accepted for that sport. Swimming, ten pin bowling and running remain the most popular sports, but there are also strong numbers for dancesport and lawn bowls. Volleyball and field hockey are the team sports with the largest registrations. Over half of the people signing up come from outside New Zealand. The Outgames takes place in Wellington, New Zealand, 12–19 March 2011. You can register at www.wellingtonoutgames.com. Sunday, October 31st, is the last day the cheaper fees are available for Outgames registration and for the sports events. The Outgames conference fees have a later earlybird cut-off date of 30 November, because the full conference programme has not yet been announced. Conference goers can still save money by signing up for the basic registration fee before 31 October.
