The top five reasons you love Rufus!

Wed 27 Oct 2010 In: Music View at Wayback View at NDHA

Rufus Wainwright is about to embark on three shows in his much-awaited New Zealand return. We asked gay fans why they love him so much – here's what you had to say! 5. Rufus has a quirkiness I can't quite describe; it's not all on the surface, somehow entrenched in his masterful songwriting, so that the emotional experience of listening to his albums doesn't get old. I also think the fact that he managed to get across his drug addiction is quite endearing, as a lot of people really struggle with it – Andy. 4. Rufus was the soundtrack to my first great love affair - my first boyfriend introduced me to him and it seems every memory I have of that relationship is tied up with one of Rufus' songs. And during the breakup he hit just the right tone of melancholy to let me know that even though I was hurting, it would get better. And it did. He's a genius and an inspiration and I'd love to see him perform in Wellington- Martyn. 3. Rufus is quirky, unique and gorgeous. I love the juxtapose of fragility and strength in his voice and the way he can push sounds to my extremities. When we had our car broken into and the CD/radio stolen, they also took the Rufus W CD that George had purchased the day before, which was in it. The annoying bit was they left the cover, to remind us of the crime ... maybe they were in a rush, or maybe they just wanted the stereo, anyway, we both commented that we hoped they listened and enjoyed the music anyway – Paul 2. I first fell in love with Rufus the day I saw his tribute to Leonard Cohen, who in my eyes is the greatest poet since Shakespeare. Rufus Wainwright is a unique performer, and I love him because he captures the soul of any song he sings. His relationship with Leonard Cohen has natured, in my eyes, one of the greatest singers, with one of the greatest voices, unique, because he is beloved by all generations, and I should know, I'm only 21 – Luke. 1. I actually cried when Rufus had to pull out of his tour earlier in the year, but cried even more when I heard it was because his much-loved mother, Kate McGarrigle, lost her battle with cancer. Rufus is super sexy and super talented and I really want to attend the show and have him serenade me (at least in my mind) – Kurt. Congratulations to Kurt who gets his wish to have Rufus serenade him at his Wellington show! And Luke who wins tickets to see Rufus in Christchurch – we appreciate his well developed music taste at such a tender age! To all those who missed out, don't get down – we loved your answers too. And NOW you can win the chance with GayNZ.com to score tickets to see Richard O'Brien live onstage in The Rocky Horror Show! Yes, we just love our readers that much.
