Charges dropped over NYC anti-gay torture

The Bronx house where the attack took place Charges have been dropped against three of the 11 suspects arrested the beating and torture of four men in an horrific anti-gay attack in New York. A 17-year-old victim was beaten and sodomised with a plunger handle in a Bronx house in October, because members of the “Latin King Goonies” gang thought one of their recruits was gay. Another 17-year-old also thought to be gay was attacked, and a 30-year-old and his brother were beaten as well. NBC New York reports charges have been dropped against three suspects, because prosecutors say there is insufficient evidence to charge Steven Carabello, Bryan Almonte and Brian Cepeda. They had been charged with robbery, gang assault and unlawful imprisonment. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn told NBC, "I am both shocked and profoundly disappointed by his decision. It is a decision that was made before all testimony was gathered and before grand jury proceedings occurred.” The beatings followed a string of anti-gay attacks and teen suicides attributed to anti-gay bullying across the US, including the beating of a patron at the historic Stonewall Inn in Manhattan.
