Remembering a wahine toa

Sun 24 Oct 2010 In: Community View at Wayback View at NDHA

On Saturday 16th October 2010, I was honoured to join the Tocker whanau, friends and NZ Singers and Songwriters in the Hura Kohatu (unveiling) of Mahinaarangi and her Mum Rihitapuwae in Taumarunui. For many people Mahinaarangi was one of those amazing Mana Wahine Maori whose bravery in agreeing to be one of the public faces of the Like Minds Like Mine Television Campaigns spoke out about her own experience of mental illness and gave us Tangata Whaiora a voice, and was a strong advocate for the sector. She was a determined Wahine Toa who spoke her mind and whose creativity, humour, passion and longevity as a Maori female singer/songwriter inspired many people throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand and the world. She was also a strong advocate within our Rainbow Community attending many fundraisers like Big Gay Out, and she also performed at Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. She shared her creativity and love of music around the country to boost learning and self-esteem and was an adult literacy tutor, writer and poet. On Saturday famous NZ Singers Shona Laing, Charlotte Yates and Don McGlashan performed some wonderful waiata along with Mahina's sister Mahara and the Tocker whanau entertaining us with the sharing of thoughts and song in this day of remembrance. Our love for you will always be with us.     Aaron Wooley - 24th October 2010
