Line demeaning gays removed from movie

Mon 18 Oct 2010 In: International News View at NDHA

A promo still from The Dilemma A line demeaning gays has been removed from a new Ron Howard directed movie starring Vince Vaughn and Winona Ryder. In an early cut of the movie The Dilemma, Vaughn's character says "Electric cars are gay. I mean, not 'homosexual' gay but 'my parents are chaperoning the dance' gay." High-profile US journalist Anderson Cooper and mega-celeb Ellen DeGeneres anf gay rights groups have criticised the wording as derogatory to gay people. Responding to their complaints Vaughn himself replied: “Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing divided lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop?” It is still unclear whether the line will be missing from the finally-released cut of the movie which is due out in the USA in mid-January.
