Gay marriage advocate voted Labour leader

Mon 27 Sep 2010 In: International News View at Wayback

Ed Miliband Gay marriage advocate Ed Miliband has been voted as the new leader of Britain's Labour Party. At 40 he is the youngest leader in party history and beat his own brother David Miliband, the former frontrunner for the leadership, to land the role. "Today a new generation has taken charge of Labor, a new generation that understands the call of change," Ed Miliband says. Earlier this month he topped a poll for PinkNews.co.uk of Labour party and affiliated union members, with 42 percent support. Writing for the website last month, Ed Miliband argued that civil partnerships were "not good enough". He added: "I know that civil partnerships were a major step forward, but I also hear those who want the genuine equality of gay marriage." Pink News is calling on the new leader to continue to fight for the LGBT equality changes he pledged as Labour leader. The result means that both the Liberal Democrats and the Labour party have leaders who are in favour of full LGBT marriage equality.
