Angry students are accusing National of failing to listen, after a select committee has endorsed a bill that would make student union membership voluntary. The Education and Science Select Committee has decided to back the Education (Freedom of Association) Amendment Bill, despite an overwhelming majority of submissions against it. Among those who steadfastly oppose the law change are queer university groups, which say it would lead to a huge fall in their funding and even put their future existence at risk. NZUSA says the committee received 4,837 submissions on the bill, with only 89 in support. The proposed law change is the brainchild of the ACT Party but is reported to have National backing. It is expected to have its second reading in a month. NZUSA Co-President David Do says the recommendation is irresponsible and very disappointing. "The government members of the committee have failed to listen to students and the public. National has chosen to ignore the overwhelming opposition to the bill, as well as the many compelling policy and practical arguments to maintain or enhance the current law."
