A three-piece who are bringing their raucous sound to alternative lesbian night Proud Mary tomorrow have just picked up a brand spanking new Tui. Street Chant won the inaugural Critics' Choice Prize at Auckland's Kings Arms Tavern last night, after all the shortlisted groups were given 30 minutes each to win over the 13 judges. The prize is a new addition to the New Zealand Music Awards, designed to showcase up and coming musicians. The pop-punk band win recording time at York Street Studios, $5,000 worth of equipment and mentoring from industry professionals. Street Chant are one of the most talked about bands on the Auckland music scene right now and as such the organiser of alternative women's night Proud Mary is excited to have them at the head of tomorrow night's line-up. Female duo Cat Venom will also play, along with a stable of DJs, while a burlesque show from local scene queen Miss Phloss has been added to the line-up.
