Candy Lane and Steven Gray at the gaba auction in July After raising $18,500 with its charity auction in July, the gaba Charitable Trust is now looking for people and groups who need a helping hand to apply for a slice of the pie. Applications for both the gaba Community Grants and the gaba Tertiary Scholarship are now being taken. In the past decade the trust has donated in excess of $150,000 to fund a broad range of organisations. The trust's aim is to donate money where it is most needed, and where it have the greatest impact. About Community Grants: The principal objective of the Trust is to "maintain a fund available to individuals and institutions for the explicit purpose of health, welfare, and support services for the benefit of the gay community of New Zealand". While any project, activity or service that complies with the above objective can be considered, priority will be given to those that: · benefit the Auckland gay community · benefit a large number of individuals · have an educational focus · assist in reducing the marginalisation of gay people within society The Application deadline for Community Grants is Friday 5 November. About Tertiary Scholarships: Three years ago gaba and the Trust also created the gaba Secondary Scholarship, which assists young people leaving secondary school through their first year of full-time tertiary study. This year, in recognition of the increased costs and challenges or Tertiary education, the gaba Charitable Trust is offering two larger scholarships of $3000 each for the first year of tertiary studies. The awards are offered to a student who identifies as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender (GLBT); is seen as a good role model by peers and teachers; and who has excelled in effort and achievement in their secondary education. The Scholarship is open to any GLBT student who is enrolling in a full time degree course, of at least three years duration, at any Tertiary level institution recognised as such by the NZQA. The Application deadline for the Tertiary Scholarships is Sunday 31 October. Application forms for both the gaba Community Grants and gaba Tertiary Scholarshipsare available here and can completed and submitted online or through post.
