"Homosexual past" raised in murder trial

Wed 15 Sep 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

The "homosexual past" of a Wanganui man accused of murdering his step-son has been raised at his trial, as the Crown alleged a sexual motive in the killing. Douglas Ham, 37, is on trial the High Court in Rotorua, accused of stabbing 25-year-old James Galloway to death with a boning knife in Turangi on 23 May last year. The Daily Post reports Crown Prosecutor Amanda Gordon has told the jury Ham may have killed Mr Galloway because of a non-consensual sexual act between the pair. She said stones found in the victim's underwear came from the area Ham lured him to and DNA from blood found on his private parts were Ham's. Mrs Gordon said Ham had been in a relationship with Mr Galloway's mother, for the past nine year, but prior to that had only ever had relationships with men. "You need to know, prior to the relationship with Christine, the accused was a homosexual." "He had only had sex with men," she said. The trial is expected to continue until Friday.
