Family escapes damage from arson attack

Mon 13 Sep 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News

2.25pm update: A deliberately-lit blaze in the toilets at Family has done no major damage and it is business as usual for the K' Rd gay bar. Around 12.30am someone stuffed toilet paper into a hole in the toilet wall and lit it. The duty manager quickly reeled out the fire hose and doused the flames. Family owner Wayne Clark says there is no damage and the bar remains open. The Fire Service immediately ruled the fire was suspicious and police are investigating the arson. It comes hot on the heels of an arson attack outside another central Auckland gay bar. The mannequin, Sara, which sits outside Dot's Bar on Symonds St, was set on fire on Wednesday night. Sara's torso was burned, but she is now back out on the street sporting a bandage and hospital gown.
