Album Review: Enrique Iglesias - Euphoria

Sun 12 Sep 2010 In: Music View at Wayback View at NDHA

Despite selling over 55 million records worldwide, it's never really seemed like Enrique Iglesias has achieved that global superstar status you might equate with such sales. He tends to be largely ignored by radio and his albums, while still selling quite well, don't tend to chart so well. Up until now he's courted the Spanish and English markets separately but with Euphoria he releases his first bilingual, album with less than stellar results. Almost in a desperate attempt to show he does have that superstar status he's roped in some big names to help him, and indeed it's not until the fifth track that he goes it alone. I Like It features a cameo from collaborative rapper of the moment, Pitbull and is easily the best thing here. Its early noughties euro-dance feel is the only thing here to come close to anything euphoric. Akon features on the reggae tinged One Day At A Time, while Nicole Sherzinger takes the guest spot on the Ryan Tedder-esque Heartbeat. All feature an unfortunately over-liberal use of auto tune. Midway through, the album switches to an over-long run of Spanish language tunes, none of which are outstanding enough to keep you hooked for the remaining handful of English songs at the end. One song does not an album make, and after a promising opener, it's a swift downward decline into dullness for this one.
