A hold has been put on same-sex couples marrying in California, while a US appeals court considers the legality of Proposition 8. The ban on same-sex marriage passed in November 2008, but was ruled unconstitutional by District Court Chief Judge Vaughn Walker earlier this month, A US appeals court has now ruled that same-sex couples can't marry in the state while the court considers the case. Reuters reports an aggressive schedule has been set for the case, with a hearing the week of December 6. Last week Walker said gay marriages could resume while higher courts considered the matter. But the brief ruling by the three-judge appellate panel reverses that, prohibiting gay marriage during the appeal. The appeals court has no deadline for a ruling, and the panel gave no reason for its decision on Monday.
