Six injured in "anti-gay" Oxford St bashings

Thu 12 Aug 2010 In: International News

Sydney's 'gay golden mile' Oxford St Sydney police have arrested a man over a sequence of 'anti-gay' bashings on Oxford St which has left two people in hospital with serious injuries. Samesame.com.au reports six people were attacked by a man in his 30s, who, wearing heavy military-style boots, swung karate kicks at them as they walked down the 'gay golden mile' on Monday night. Those injured include equality campaigner Simon Margan, who was left with a shattered eye socket. He believes he was the victim of anti-gay rage. "I'd seen him before, tearing down gay event posters and mumbling about ‘eradicating gays'. He tried to kick me and at first he missed – I stood back, but he took aim, hitting me in the eye. I'd thought he'd had a knife," he has told Same Same. "I screamed for help, as my face started bleeding. The attacker had been so calm. He didn't say anything. I think his attacks were premeditated – he was doing it because he hated gays." A man was apprehended at the scene and is facing nine charges. Police say six people were injured in the attacks. Margan is urging anyone who was attacked to come forward and make complaints to police.
