Mika is bringing a longtime dream into fruition with his new TV show kā life, which looks at health and fitness from a holistic perspective. The programme, which premieres on Maori TV on Sunday, features Maori families with plus-size bodies who he shows 'basic' things like how to sit properly in chairs or how to exercise while vacuuming. "It's actually really real stuff, because let's face it, the majority of us have a gym membership, but don't use it." Mika says being healthy actually has a lot to do with the mind. "To lose that one little bit of weight off your body, sometimes it takes getting a tonne off your mind." The performer says the programme is about health gain, rather than weight loss. It includes Mika's youth dance crew showing off their high-impact 'geek dancing' skills, plus easy low fat recipes from chef to the stars Peter Chaplin. The episodes finish with Mika's own workout, which he says has to be seen to be believed. "Every week I'm in a new location. I'm in Paris, I'm in Cuba. I'm all over the place. You have to see it to understand the joke." Mika says the programme is something he has wanted to do for many years. He says in every episode he also has discussions on a range of topics, including HIV and sexual health. "I also talk about sexuality full-stop in a very Mika holistic 'hey you, this is us' kind of way." Kā life screens on Maori Television on Sundays at 5pm from 15 August and runs for six months.
