Fed-up flight attendant makes dramatic escape

Tue 10 Aug 2010 In: International News

Steven Slater on MySpace Like something out of a movie, a fed-up JetBlue flight attendant has been arrested in New York after swearing at passengers over an intercom, grabbing a stash of alcohol, making a dashing escape via an inflatable emergency slide … then driving home to have sex with his boyfriend. Steve Slater went into an angry rant after he was hit in the head with a heavy bag as a passenger stood to collect his luggage too soon. The 38-year-old then got on the PA and apparently spewed forth with, "to the f---ing a--hole who told me to f--- off, it's been a good 28 years." "I've had it. That's it," he added, taking off his company tie and flinging it away. Slater then grabbed two beers, popped one open then, according to theNew York Times, "pulled the lever that activates the emergency-evacuation chute and slid down, making a dramatic exit not only from the plane but, one imagines, also from his airline career." TheNew York Daily News reports the frustrated steward then drove home to have sex with his boyfriend. His home, in Queens, was stormed by detectives and uniformed police soon after and officers found him in bed, with his boyfriend. He was grinning as he was led to a police car. Neighbours spoke to by various New York media described Slater as a nice guy, but said he was under some stress. His father died recently and his mother has cancer and he has been taking care of her. "I wish we could all quit our jobs like that," passenger Phil Catelinet, 36, of Brooklyn told the New York Daily News. "It's pretty much the craziest thing I've ever seen on a plane," Catelinet said. Slater has been charged with felony counts of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
