Mon 19 Jul 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News

Anika Moa Lesbian songstress Anika Moa is teaming up with Women's Refuge to help raise awareness of its annual appeal week. She is auctioning a 'life pass' to her concerts on Trade Me, which will give the lucky bidder two tickets to any show where she headlines for the rest of her career. The package also includes a signed acoustic guitar, copies of all her released albums, all her future releases, a poster and merchandise including a tea towel, kete, tote bag and t-shirt. Proceeds from the winning bid will be donated directly to Women's Refuge. The auction opened this morning and bids have already surpassed $1,000. Chief Executive Heather Henare says Women's Refuge is honoured to have Moa's support. "She is so vibrant and talented and has a wide appeal across New Zealand which will really help us get our message out," she says. "She decided to support our appeal because she believes violence, abuse, threats, taunts, anger and hate are not things women or children should have to put up with." The theme of this year's appeal, which runs from today till Sunday, is tackling the issue of fear. "Too many women and children live in a constant state of fear from physical and emotional abuse. The effects are crippling," says Henare. "We receive a crisis call every nine minutes and help thousands of women and children a year in their attempt to live their lives free of abuse. Like Anika, we are passionate about the right women and children have to live free of fear." Refuges throughout the country will be collecting on the street during that week but it is also possible to donatehere or 0900 REFUGE.
