Melbourne DJs to headline Proud Mary

Fri 16 Jul 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

Auckland's alternative night for queer women Proud Mary is going from strength to strength, with female Melbourne duo The Undercutters headlining tonight's third instalment. Women packed K Rd's 4:20 nightclub for the first two nights of the event in March and May. Promoter Katija Vlatkovich says Proud Mary is definitely living up to its name. "The nights are loud, sexy and people just seem to let go. I have been amazed at how many girls are into the alternative/electro/indie genre, with new faces each time," she says. "Proud Mary's got a lot left in her I think and it's great to see people continuously coming along and supporting." Vlatkovich says The Undercutters are known for playing in venues such as the infamous gay Melbourne pub/club Glasshouse Hotel and will churn out "old school remixed filth spiced up with the newest and dirtiest tracks they can find". "They know how to get the crowd pumping and begging for more," Vlatkovich says. One of Auckland's most in-demand DJ outfits, the Quay Street Social Club, will return to support The Undercutters. Aucklander DJ Tom Tom will go head to head with Wellington's DJ Dyson, which Vlatkovich says will be a set not to miss as "these two know music like the back of their hands". Proud Mary is open to all queer and queer-friendly people, with the philosophy that "people from all sexualities should be able to mix and mingle without feeling ashamed or intimidated by anyone while listening to great beats". Vlatkovich has also started a Proud Mary blog which features pictures and updates, check it out here
