Glammed up for the Lesbian Ball Organisers of Auckland's Lesbian Ball are delighted with a large turnout of younger women, saying it shows "you don't have to be a nana" to enjoy the event. An estimated 200 people dressed up for the black and white theme midwinter extravaganza at the Hyatt Regency on Saturday night. Attendees report it was a fun and well-organised night. The ball is organised by LESO (Lesbian Support Organisation) and spokeswoman Glenda Haines says it was an awesome evening, with great atmosphere and excellent music. "It was fantastic to see a large turnout of younger women this year. They definitely had a great time so perhaps the message is getting out that the ball caters for all ages and you don't have to be a nana to enjoy it," she says. "The girls from Candy Bar set up the Candy Bar Lounge area and they were clearly partying hard if the shrieking and laughter was anything to go by." Haines says LESO is really thrilled with the way the ballroom looked. "And the fact that the dance floor was pretty packed most of the night is a good indicator that DJ Jen and DJ Kel were doing a great job of playing a wide range of music with something for everyone." Haines says the Hyatt staff were friendly and professional and looked after everyone attending. She lists highlights of the night as a formation performance by the Dance Out ballroom dance group, which is working towards the AsiaPacific Outgames in Wellington next March. Musicians Lee and Jodi also played a "rocking set that had everyone on the dance floor," she says. Spot prizes were handed out over the night for categories such as shortest dress, most original, highest hair, lowest cleavage and most feathers. There were also three lucky table and two lucky ticket prizes. One lucky ticket winner got a weekend for two at Eco Lodge B Marion, Julie, Jenny, Gillian, Glenda."
