Tue 29 Jun 2010 In: International News View at Wayback

Johanna Sigurdardottir Iceland's Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir has become the world's first leader with a same-sex spouse, marrying her longtime partner Jonina Leosdottir. The nation's Parliament unanimously passed legislation that allows gay couples to marry on 12 June. The 67-year-old Prime Minister has lived with Leosdottir, who is a writer in her fifties, for many years. They had previously had a civil union, under an earlier law Iceland passed in 2002. Sigurdardottir sent a message to a gathering celebrating the new law coming into effect yesterday, saying it was a cause for celebration for all Icelanders and adding: "I have today taken advantage of this new legislation." The Prime Minister has children from a previous heterosexual marriage. She is the world's only openly gay prime minister.
