California gay marriage trial to resume

Tue 15 Jun 2010 In: International News View at Wayback View at NDHA

After a long break, the trial over whether California's gay marriage ban is constitutional will continue this week. Chief US Judge Vaughn Walker has already heard 12 days of testimony in the civil rights case, which is expected to eventually reach the US Supreme Court. After a break of more than four months where he has studied the cases of the two opposing sides and read briefs from interest groups, he wants to wrap up the trial with a sitting on Wednesday, California time. He has sent lists of key questions to both lawyers representing gay rights advocates and the sponsors of Proposition 8, which successfully banned gay marriage in the state at the last election. The judge has indicated he does not plan to rule from the bench. Lawyers say they are preparing for him to hand down his ruling within weeks after the closing arguments.
