Music review: Goldfrapp's Head First

Fri 4 Jun 2010 In: Music View at NDHA

Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory are back for another round of pure synth-pop pleasure with Goldfrapp's latest release Head First. Kicking off with the single Rocket that is sure to inspire some sexual imagery with the club kids "I've got a rocket, you're going on it" – we see Goldfrapp here with one of the best songs released as a single. It's got that steady dance tempo that will be sure to bring a few up onto the dance floor for a bit of bump-and-grind. Believer follows Rocket and delivers a very catchy chorus typical of any good Goldfrapp song, similarly - Shiny and Warm instantly reminds me as if it were a b-side from their album Black Cherry. With its chorus quite apt for our impending winter and vocally arousing arrangement, this song is one of the standouts of the album to me personally, and a gives a good reason to dance next to a glitter-covered dancer in a club. I Wanna Life makes a great song to swing your partner around to, and is one of the delights of this album. Although Goldfrapp have never quite made it as high in the charts in New Zealand as Madonna, there are some definite similarities between the two artists, visually and vocally. However, there seems to be some bad blood between the two, with Goldfrapp not so keen on what she perceives as Madonna ‘stealing' parts of others songs. The album overall is quite a pleasant trip back to the 80s while still retaining the traditional style of Goldfrapp. Be sure to pick up this release from iTunes or your local CD store (it's a great pity you can't buy this on cassette to further bring back the 80s nostalgia) and slip it on next time you have some friends over for a drink. It's not going to raise the roof, but it'll get people moving nonetheless. - Michael Ciuchini Watch the video for Goldfrapp's Rocket below! Michael Ciuchini - 4th June 2010
