Liberation set to heat up Christchurch

Mon 31 May 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News View at Wayback

A new gay dance party is being launched in Christchurch this Queen's Birthday Weekend, with promoters predicting the mixture of lighting, effects and music will make it one of a kind event for the community. Liberation is being held on Sunday 6 June at Base nightclub in Sol Square. Described as evoking a "little London" feel, it will feature an extensive lightshow, as well as house, dance and drum and bass music. Organisers Jack and Jimi say the idea stemmed from discussions with older people in the community about the former 'Freedom Parties', which led to the name Liberation. "The concept for Liberation is somewhat different, but perhaps relative, given the trends of the time," says Jimi. "We see this as an exciting addition to what is already on offer to the Christchurch GLBT community throughout the year - and being on a long weekend it might encourage GLBT visitors to Christchurch. We feel it will cater especially to thehard core night owls, dancers and ravers." The organizers say there has already been very strong support and interest shown already from lesbian and bear groups, as well as younger men in the gay community. "We hope that this will be an annual event. But that's really up to the community to decide," says Jimi. Pulzar FM will supply the music. Tickets are on sale at Cosmic Corner and Somerset Print, or can be bought by contacting the organisers: liberationparty2010@gmail.com
