New GenderBridge Coordinator appointed

Tue 25 May 2010 In: New Zealand Daily News

Cam Michael Cam Michael has been appointed to the role of Coordinator with GenderBridge. Chairperson Jaimie Veale says it is a brand new position, which the Auckland-based transgender support organisation is very excited about. "Having a GenderBridge staff member recognises the growth of Genderbridge as an organisation." Michael comes to GenderBridge from a background predominantly in the community sector as a trained youth worker, while he has also worked with adults within severaldisability and mental health services. He spent a number of years on the boards of Rainbow Youth and GenderBridge and has been a phone counsellor for Youthline. He also facilitated workshops in schools for Rainbow Youth and the organisation's social support group for transgender youth - Gender Quest. The Coordinator position involves providing support to the transgender community and their significant others, friends and whanau via answering the phone helpline, as well as networking with other organisations to raise GenderBridge's profile and further support the transgender community. In addition, Michael will source funding for the organisation and day-to-day administration to sustain GenderBridge - and work on growing it. Michael is passionate about growing GenderBridge as an organisation, fostering diversity within GenderBridge and making sure the voices of its members gets heard. He's interested to hear from members of the transgender community, as well as members of the wider community interested in connecting with the transgender community, to gain feedback about what GenderBridge is doing well and what services they would like to see GenderBridge providing. The group is tonight holding its AGM, where it will include an amendment to make membership of GenderBridge free, in an endeavour to make it more accessible. Cam can be contacted via cam@genderbridge.org or by phoning 09 9162764 on Mondays 2pm-7pm and Tuesdays 1pm-6pm. GenderBridge can also be contacted through its helpline on 0800 TG HELP (0800 844 357), and website: www.Genderbridge.org
