NSW politician resigns after gay sauna visit aired

Sat 22 May 2010 In: International News View at NDHA

David Campbell A New South Wales cabinet minister has resigned after being outed in prime time by TV network Channel 7. David Campbell tendered his resignation from Cabinet after secretly filmed footage was aired showing him emerging from Sydney's Kens of Kensington suburban gay sauna. Apparently cabinet and Labour colleagues had known for some years that he was gay or bi but the news came as a surprise to his wife and family.  Channel 7 justified exposing Campbell by saying that he had historically promoted family values. It was not clear if "family values" was used in the anti-gay sense adopted by ultra-conservative Christian groups. NSW premier  Kristina Keneally is said to be "shocked and devastated" by the resignation which she says she accepted to allow Campbell time to sort out personal matters with his family. Campbell will remain as MP for Woollongong.  "I think it is appalling that he kept this secret, particularly from his family and from  his colleagues," Keneally said. "I also think it is appalling that we live in a society where he felt he had to keep that secret," she added.
