Q-topia is going from strength to strength, with a surge in membership and a hugely successful contribution to Christchurch Pride. The Canterbury queer youth support network organised a bingo night, which attracted over 100 people. It also fully-developed and ran the popular Queer Fair, which it says was a massive success. More than 500 people enjoyed everything from stalls, to a live DJ, a cooking demo and drag queen racing. Q-topia administrator Anne Nicholson says the money raised will go towards providing activities for members such as; coffee nights, movies, 10 pin bowling and an alternative ball. She says the money will also be used for further promotion and development of Q-topia. Nicholson says pride week was well organised, well supported and heaps of fun. She says it was essential for the group to be significantly involved. "Our members are the next generation of Christchurch's queer and trans community, this was their week to celebrate as well." Nicholson says the Q-topia members she has spoken to loved Christchurch Pride and say the Queer Fair was a highlight. "It is topping off a huge year of growth for us. We have had a massive increase in membership and have new facilitators in training and a new venue to meet that demand. There is a really positive buzz within Q-topia at the moment."
