Glenn Mills GayNZ.com has been nominated for a Qantas Media Award for investigative reporting, for its coverage of the Glenn Mills story. In May last year, GayNZ.com went public with community concerns over an HIV positive man who was suspected to have deliberately engaged in unsafe sex, leading to several new infections in his young partners. The police launched an investigation when a formal complaint was lodged, and Mills was arrested after several more people came forward. In all there were 14 complainants, seven who tested positive for HIV after having unsafe sex with Mills. Mills was found dead in his Mt Eden Remand Prison cell in November, a week after his bail application was denied in the High Court. GayNZ.com editor Jay Bennie says the threat Glenn Mills posed to vulnerable young gay and bisexual men was a story that had to be told in order to force the authorities to act. "We're very proud of the role we played in addressing the issue. And I'm very proud of all the people who contribute to GayNZ.com day after day and week after week, who provided the platform upon which work on investigating the allegations surrounding Glenn Mills could be based." Winners will be announced at a dinner at the Sky City Grand in Auckland on Friday, June 11.
