Chaz Bono's name change becomes official

Sun 9 May 2010 In: International News View at Wayback

American LGBT rights advocate and son of Sonny and Cher has officially had his name changed from Chastity Bono to Chaz Bono. The 41-year-old legally changed his name and gender at a Californian court, a year after undergoing a sex change procedure. "The court granted the petition and Chaz now has a court name change and a court order recognising him as male," says Bono's lawyer Kristina Wertz. "Chaz couldn't be happier. This is an important step in his transition and will allow him to change a variety of his identity documents to show who he truly is." Bono filed the request in March. "I've lived my whole life in a body having everybody relate to me as something I don't feel," he told People in December. "I finally get to live my life the way I've always wanted to."
