A review of New Zealand's HIV services is due to be made public by the end of next week and will stop short of making recommendations, according to the Ministry of Health. HIV infections in New Zealand are primarily transmitted amongst men who have sex with men and these gay or bi men also make up by far the largest group of people living with HIV and AIDS. The HIV Services Review review is being prepared by Dr David Miller, a NZ-trained clinical psychologist with experience of HIV/AIDS and sexual health programmes overseas. Miller has since February been obtaining information from organisations such as the NZ AIDS Foundation, positive people's support groups, sexual health clinics and focus groups of people living with HIV or AIDS. He will be reporting on prevention and support aspects of HIV programmes but will not make any recommendations to the Ministry. "[Dr Miller] has been tasked with reviewing services, to inform the Ministry's decision-making, but not to make recommendations," a Ministry spokesperson says.
