The Candy girls After a wildly successful launch weekend, the crew at Auckland's Candy bar are promising there is plenty more to look forward to. Lesbians came out in full force to support the launch on Friday and Saturday nights, packing the K' Rd venue to capacity. There were lines at the door across a three hour period on Friday night and once punters were inside there were even more lines to get drinks at the bar. Staff say Saturday was not as jam-packed, but was also a very busy night. Candy bar's creator Kim Lucas is thrilled at the way the community supported the launch of what is New Zealand's only dedicated lesbian bar. "It was an amazing weekend, way beyond our expectations, and everyone so positive and excited about the Candy bar future." Lucas promises there is plenty ahead for the venue. This weekend up-and-coming DJs are being auditioned live in front of the crowd on Thursday and Friday. The bar will close at midnight on Saturday due to ANZAC Day, but will be open late on Sunday night where the winner of the DJ auditions will play a debut set. The full programme for May is yet to be revealed, but Lucas says it will include DJs, live music, dancers, comedians, pool competitions, quizzes and bingo. There have been some questions raised in the community about whether men are allowed into the bar. Lucas says the policy is very simple: "Women can bring any of their friends to Candy bar whatever their gender, but men are not admitted without women." Lucas says Candy bar is a women's bar for everyone to enjoy.
