Georgina Beyer says she will wait until early May before making a firm announcement about whether she will return to politics by campaigning for the Masterton mayoralty. Georgina Beyer A Wairarapa Times Age self-selecting phone text poll showed that 63% of 170 respondents would vote for Beyer compared to just 23% for the incumbent Garry Daniells. Beyer says she "won't be making a decision based just on that" but acknowledges that the vast majority of letters to the editor in the Wairarapa have been supportive of her. She says people have been stopping her in the Masterton streets "offering their endorsement." Beyer made international headlines when she became the world's first elected transsexual mayor, of nearby Carterton, in 1995. She went on to become the world's first elected transsexual MP when she stood for Wairarapa in 2002. Despite competing to widespread acclaim in the hugely popular Dancing With the Stars TV series Beyer dropped of the political radar somewhat after she resigned from Parliament in 2007 and late last year considered moving to Australia to find work.
